I believe healthcare is a human right. In the richest nation in the world, every person should have access to quality, affordable healthcare. Too many families struggle to pay for healthcare and health insurance. Health insurance keeps going up, and working families have to foot the bill. This is unacceptable. Wisconsin families should not be paying for multi-million dollar salaries of insurance CEOs.
Here in Wisconsin, there are two actions we could take immediately that would help expand coverage and reduce cost: Creating a BadgerCare public option, and expanding Medicaid/Medicare. These two actions would cost Wisconsin ZERO additional taxes; in fact, it would save Wisconsin money! Better, more affordable coverage, plus fiscal responsibility? Yes!
I believe that a strong public education system is the bedrock of a strong democracy. Public education is also a moral and economic issue. A well-funded public education system produces citizens who are well-educated and ready to become productive members of society. And for many young people, a good public school can be their ticket out of poverty and into the middle class. As State Representative, one of my top priorities would be restoring funding our public K-12 system and the University of Wisconsin system. Governor Walker and the Republican legislature enacted the largest cuts to education in our state’s history—over one *billion* dollars. This is unacceptable. It’s simple: we want our children to grow up healthy, strong, and ready to take on the world. Let’s give them the tools to do that.
Wisconsin's roads need repair. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), driving on crumbling roads costs each Wisconsin driver $637 annually. We all know the pain of driving over a big pothole and worrying about car repair costs. 27% of Wisconsin’s roads are in need of repair. Overall, ASCE rated Wisconsin’s infrastructure a “D+”. We can do better, Wisconsin! We need to make investments in our roads, bridges, transit systems, and drinking water. These investments will not only be good for Wisconsinites’ quality of life; they will make Wisconsin an attractive place to do business, leading to more economic growth.
Gun Violence Prevention
It is heartbreaking that children are subjected to the fear of gun violence in schools, and have to prepare to live out that violence. When I was growing up, we never had to have an “active shooter” drill in school, and now it’s commonplace! This should not be normal. I support the young people of Parkland, Florida and all across the nation who are standing up against NRA-backed politicians. I pledge to never take NRA money in any political campaign I ever run.
As state representative, I will support criminal background checks for all gun sales. The vast majority of Americans, 97% (including an overwhelming majority of gun owners, NRA members and Republicans), support universal background checks. We need to prohibit bump stocks and high-capacity magazines. These measures will go a long way in protecting our children and communities from gun violence.
Additionally, I will support Red Flag laws, also known as “Extreme Risk Protection Orders”, which will allow immediate family members to petition a judge to temporarily remove guns from the possession of someone who is in danger of hurting themselves, while they get the help that they need.
I support Wisconsin’s rich hunting tradition. Legal game hunting is a part of our shared history and time-honored tradition, passed down from generation to generation. Assault weapons are not for hunting. They belong in the military, not in the hands of untrained civilians.
